It combines a two of my favorite things in life: driving a rally car in the snow and snowboarding in the powder in the back country. It’s incredibly fun having the ability to push the high-power Subaru on the slopes and to back country spots that normal cars could never go!

If you’re into cars and don’t know who Ken Block is then you’re just not into cars. If your not into cars, then you probably want to learn what drifting is because let me tell you, Ken can Drift. (what kind of an intro is that aye?)

I posted his ‘Gymkhana Practice’ video a little while ago and this is a followup to that.

Makes me wish I had my WRX STi back again (the Liberty‘s great if you want drive from A->B), though the days of attempting drifts around Essendon DFO carpark are long gone now – with an old mid-80s Celica which was RWD, before that a friends ancient Datsun 200B Sedan, oh the memories!

Subaru to withdraw from WRC in 2009 :(

Sad and tragic news today, that Subaru will be withdrawing from the WRC.

Australian world rally championship driver Chris Atkinson will be forced to look for a new manufacturer in 2009 with Subaru pulling out of the sport because of the global financial crisis.

Japan’s Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru cars, made the announcement on Tuesday.

“Our business environment has rapidly deteriorated. In order to protect the Subaru brand we were forced to make this decision,” Fuji Heavy president Ikuo Mori told a press conference.

Mori fought back tears as he announced the decision at a press conference, thanking Subaru fans.

Times are tough and we can all understand why FHI had to do this, as they stated in the official press release:

This sudden decision was in response to the widespread economic downturn that is affecting the entire automotive industry, and follows Suzuki’s withdrawal announced yesterday.

After 20 years in the sport, during which time the Prodrive-run Subaru World Rally Team has won six World Rally Championship titles, this is not only sad news for Subaru and the team, but also for millions of rallying fans around the world. Thanks to its highly successful World Rally Championship programme, Subaru has developed into one of the world’s most widely recognised and evocative automotive brands.

Thanks for the memories and putting me on the path to buying a STi as my first “new car”. Whilst the new Suuby’s aren’t quite my type the WRC models are timeless. But it seems all is not lost:

Looking ahead, 2010 will see the introduction of new World Rally Championship technical regulations, which provide Prodrive with an opportunity to prepare for re-entering the championship with a new team and build on its 24 years of World Rally Championship experience and success.

Cant wait till then, in the meantime I hope they bring out their WRX STi sedans sometime soon as the Lancer is getting a major lead in the looks department in comparison I’m still enjoying my MY06 Liberty which is up for its 55K service soon.

Now thats what I call skills, Gymkhana encapusulates everything to show your true skills in handling a car – in this case a MY06 Subaru WRX STi. Damn I miss my MY03 STi – not that I could pull _any_ of those styles of driving (except maybe a half-assed powerslide).

… when someone gets caught in the act with a car-wash vacuum…

THOMAS TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Police say a Michigan man has been arrested after “receiving sexual favors from a vacuum” at a car wash.

….

Police Sgt. Gary Breidinger says a resident called to report suspicious activity at the car wash about 6:45 a.m. An officer approached on foot and caught the man in the act.

How one goes about getting sexual favors from a car wash vacuum is beyond me – and not something I’d even want to think about. Though I’m sure Andreas may have contemplated it at one stage or another (purely for educational reasons I’m sure).

Man-Arrested: THIS FUCKING SUCKS MAN.

If anything this has taught me to never look at a car-wash vacuum the same way.

Autosalon 2008 – The Cars, The Ladies & The Nissan Skyline R35-GTR

A good mate from highschool and I decided to get to the AutoSalon today. The day started out – as we’d planned the night before – quite late, about 11am meetup at our old highschool (they’re website is still partying like its 1999), then take one car to the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. But as chance would have it, neither of us turned up on time. Zi Kai didnt realise that Day Light Saving time comes into affect today and the friends house I was sleeping over at ended up turning the clock _back_ an hour instead of infront. So after a few SMS exchanges we rescheduled and got there an hour or so later.

One of the main highlights in this years show – atleast for us – was the Nissan Skyline R35-GTR which was going to be having a dyno run (already on youtube!). It was well worth it, just to get close to see the sexy beast the GTR is.
