Memoirs of Japan – Funny billboard in Osaka

October 11th, 2008 2 comments

I miss Japan, the culture, the weather (back then), the people, the atmosphere and the food. But I thought I’d share this funny billboard I came across when I was in Osaka. I was walking on my merry way one day looking for a coffee shop – either a Starbucks or a Doutor (anywhere with a decent shot!) and came across this billboard not too far from Osaka station.

No idea what its advertising as theres no mention of a brand or company, but I knew the moment I saw it – and fell into a fit of laughter – that its something I simply had to take a copy of.

Back /home/ again!

June 27th, 2008 No comments

Just got back from Japan (via Seoul) today, didnt get very much sleep on the plane (does anyone outside of 1st Class and Business Class passengers?) so I spent most of the day catching up on shut-eye. Next few posts I’ll try to gather up some ‘pieces of Japan’ posts to give a glimpse into the culture and people in Japan.

Flickr Gallery for Japan

April 29th, 2008 Comments off

Well even though I’ve been trying to keep a blog on my travels it seems harder than it originally sounded. I’ll publish them soon, but in the meantime, you can keep track of the trip via the Flickr photos uploaded in the Japan set.

Day 1 – Melbourne to Korea, Seoul (from Incheon)

April 22nd, 2008 2 comments

And so it begins. This morning I headed off to my 6-weeks trek to Japan, via Korea.

First up, we rock up in the usual hurry (look we’re only 15mins from the airport, 7mins if I’m driving!) only to find that the Korean Air flight was delayed by an hour or so. But the airline kindly issued an apology with a $10 coupon to use in the airport Cafes. So naturally as I didnt have my caffeine fix, I decided to spend it wisely at Hudson Coffee with a Tall Mocha and a Chocolate muffin, with the remaining $2 the girl offered a chocolate doughnut to complete the chocolate delight.

Probably around 12hrs later we arrived in Seoul, Incheon to pouring rain at about 6ish in the evening. Wow! What an airport, the place is huge. Checkout wasn’t as complicated as I thought it was going to be, I had to make sure I hurry out in order to get my pass for my “free” night stay at the expense of Korean Air. After getting pasted with a “KL Transit” sticker I waited patiently awaiting my shuttle bus. Two korean guys came (slightly confused) loaded us up and we drove to our hotel. First thing to note was that they drive on the right and their drivers are on the left – much like the americans. The roads on the other hand are anything but, everything is electronic or flashing, the roads are super clean and unlike Australia the side of the roads are not setup with reflectors, instead little indicating blinkers. Something somewhere is blinking as you drive.

Once I got to the hotel, checked in and lugged my bag to my room, I rushed to the bathroom, to my surprise it was one of those “Electronic Toilets” you only see in movies, hear on the internets or see on TV shows. You know the ones I mean, they have heated seats, spray water and dry your rear all while you relax and wonder why no-one had thought about it earlier. I mean surely they couldn’t possibly exist. Well let me tell you they do!

Next up I flicked on the TV to see what Korean TV was like, to my surprise there was an infomercial about Playboy gear hosted by two cute Korean girls. Flicking through I came across a TV channel dedicated to “Games”, these guys are indeed crazy about their games. A TV Channel dedicated to games and full commentary as they’re playing.

As the flight was tiring I’m headed for bed after I type this out.

Update since the last post…

April 15th, 2008 No comments

So many things have happened since the start of the year that I’ve not really bothered to update my old blog apart from when Windows Vista Service Pack 1 was released to testers.

I finally finished by undergrads in 2007 and graduated in March this year bringing to an end that chapter of my life, it kind of feels weird to realise that University is over – though I do plan on doing my masters soon (and by soon I mean within the next few years!). Earlier this year I also left Vividas, leaving me to take a well deserved (atleast thats what I keep telling myself) few months off getting acquainted with life again.

My aunt and my youngest cousin from Sri Lanka came for my graduation which was super-exciting considering it was their first visit. So we took them around Oz, I think we covered about 4000Km by car and about 2000km by plane. From the usual Canbera & Sydney (one by plane and the others in the car) to Mt. Gambier, Philip Island, Mildura, Bega, Echuca, Ballarat etc.

Next up (infact within a week) I’ll  be jetting away to Korea then Japan for a 6 week backpack around the country. Something I’ve always wanted to do, but never really had the time to take off work – so now that I’m unemployed (to a certain degree) its time to make the most of it!

Unless I manage to squeeze the old posts from the old blog into the new WordPress driven blog in the next few days, the next few posts will be about my trip. I’ll be taking my lappy (the lovely Dell M1330) with me to document my journey.
