April 26th, 2010 No comments

If you haven’t heard already, Microsoft have RTM’d both Office 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2 and Office is already available for MSDN Subscribers with SQL Server 2008 R2 arriving soonishly – you can look at the download page for SQL Server 2008 R2 and download it from MSDN now (03/05/2010). There’s also a great ebook titled “Introducing SQL Server 2008 R2” available in XPS and PDF format 🙂

I’m one of those who love the ribbon UI, its made things easier for me (helps that I really wasn’t a heavy MSFT Office user back in the days). Now everyone’s getting on board the ribbon train, even the beloved WinZip!

Don’t forget the Office 2010 Movie from last year.

werdMicrosoft has release Service Pack 2 for Office 2007. From the support KB article, this release contains:

Read the release notes for the full goss – a small cap:

  1. Because we relied on experts of each product to write the text belw, the phrasing throughout the table is not 100% consistent.  Some of the text simply describes a problem that was fixed by SP2, while other text describes the problem and the new behavior after installing SP2.  When reading the list below, please keep in mind that, despite the individual phrasing of each description, all of the issues listed should be fixed in SP2.
  2. In addition to the fixes listed below, SP2 contains additional changes which are less visible, but improve various aspects of the product.  This includes reducing the number of crashes, improving security, and fixing other issues that were deemed to be too specific to include in this list.

And grab from the Microsoft download page (99.3Mb)

As always, make sure you slipstream the SP2 into your existing Office 2007 distro for reinstalls later.

Microsoft releases Silverlight 2, and OpenOffice 3.0 goes out the door!

October 14th, 2008 No comments

A few days ago OpenOffice 3.0 got released after 3 long years of development. You should download a copy and give it ago. To be perfectly honest, because of my MSDN suby’s I never really needed OpenOffice nor did I particularly like v2.x, but v3.0 is a breath of fresh minty air with a ray of bright Sun light beaming down from the heavens. The only times I’ve ever tried was under Linux, and even then I’ve often gone for Abiword instead to avoid the bloat.

It feels far more responsive than the 2.x versions I’ve tried, heck it even loads a helluva lot faster too and doesnt seem to chew up the resources 2.x did.

The Office Word compatibility has improved greatly. Learn more about OpenOffice 3.0 on the Linux Format article.

Then if that wasnt enough, Microsoft today launched Silverlight 2, which finally heads out of beta. Havent had a great deal of time to play with Silverlight but from the demos it looks kickass.
